In 1995 I found myself needing to leave my husband. The reasons don’t matter as much as the fact that I really had no choice in the matter. Thank goodness I was able to become a virtual assistant.

My Hobby Paid Off

Luckily, I had my little hobby which was finding ways to earn money on the internet. At the time, I was only making pocket money. Enough to buy groceries and to put some savings away. So, in December of 1995, I left my husband in Germany. My kids and I got on a plane and we moved to Manhattan Kansas. I chose there because my best friend was there, also a single mom, and I graduated high school there, so it was a place I was familiar with. As an Army brat and military wife, I didn’t really have roots (still don’t).

Credit to The Rescue

I purchased another computer, so I could have a dedicated work computer, and my kids could have one for them. I got serious about earning money from home. By the end of 1996, I was profitable, and that money combined with child support I was able to raise my girls without us living in poverty. Now, all these years later I find myself looking back on those times and I’m just so damn thankful that I bought that very first expensive computer on credit in 1991. Of course, over the years I had purchased more computers to keep up with the quickly changing technology.

Just Testing Things Out

I wasn’t very focused, I just needed to earn money. Technically, I had no idea what I was doing, and most people thought I was nuts. I became a divorce coach and I ran a divorce Forum. People mailed checks in the mail in those days. I built websites for small businesses eventually. The ugly 90s kind. I could get $1,000 a pop back then and they would take me a day or two to make. Eventually, that became making what was called mini-websites at the time. Just 5-page website on a certain niche with Google ads. Google ads put me through college. As some of you know, Google changed their algorithm and finally, a big algorithm change at the beginning of 2005 took my $1500 a month to zero.

Virtual Assistant Services Made The Difference

Thankfully, I was still doing services. Those services kept changing over time and eventually and I’m not sure of the dates but by 2008 I believe my focus was content strategy, content writing, email marketing and anything to do with content marketing including formatting and uploading blog posts or formatting and uploading eBooks. Which is still my focus today. Although now I am involved in creating courses, email challenges, and I publish books on Kindle.

Being Around for My Kids

All those years, I was able to be more available to my kids while still earning more than I was able to make at a job. There were certainly times that the process of earning money had to come first because of course money is what keeps you from being homeless, and keeps food on your table, and there were times where my children resented my time in front of the computer. Deadlines are deadlines. But as they grew they begin to understand and I think they’re happy that I was able to do what I did even though I doubt they truly understood it back then. I remember at one point, learning that a family member had disparaged my time on the computer not paying attention to my kids.

Why I Share & Why I Care

I only share this because I want you to understand where I come from. Why I do what I do. Why I became a virtual assistant may not have been on purpose. The term didn’t even exist then. But, this is the reason that I’m so passionate about helping other moms find a way to earn money from home whether it’s being a virtual assistant or a service provider or something else such as an affiliate marketer. I truly know that this career can take you through the next 20 years so that you can raise your children without living in poverty and without having a boring low paying job. Twenty years from now it might not look the same as it does today, but you can do it.

Even if you have a nice corporate job it’s more than likely you’re sick to death of putting your children last. You can’t go to their PTA meetings, you can’t go to every one of their games, you can’t go to their performances, you’re panicked when anyone gets sick.

While I don’t suggest you quit your job right away, one thing I know for sure is if you learn the proper steps to take, and then Implement those steps, even if you’re a little slower than some of those amazing women out there who seem to be able to get things going overnight filling their client roster to overflowing, you can do it. I have no doubt. If you’re making forward momentum that’s all that matters. The only time I fail is when I fail to implement something I planned.

I Did It So Can You

Because you see, I have done it, and I’m still doing it, and while I don’t have little children at home now I do have chronic illnesses that slow me down and force me to take days off that are unplanned. But, if I had a normal job I would be fired.

Since I’ve set my work up to be deadline-based and I only work with my ideal clients I don’t have to worry like I did when I tried to have jobs. Because over the years I’ve tried to have jobs because of the pressure from society and from my family and from other people to get a “real” job.

I mean God forbid you say that you can’t afford to eat out every night and someone will suggest you get a J.O.B. LOL, but real jobs have never paid off the way being a virtual assistant has for me. Even with a master’s degree I have never made more than $15 an hour at a job. And when I put my focus 100% on doing what I know how to do I make at least $36 to $45 an hour, sometimes more.

I just felt compelled to share this with you today. I wanted to get on a live video but I’m having a little problem with my eyes and my head hurting so I thought I would just get this out into the universe because it’s very important. If I can do it, you can do it.

You can do it. I know it. You just must get started. If you want to learn from my over 20 years of experience sign up for my VA Course. I’ll be there with you every step of the way. You’ll be glad you did it.
